Delete Facebook Account? Let’s Talk About It.

Remember the great Facebook data leak scandal?
No, not the one you think just happened — the first big one. Or was it the second? At this point, we’ve lost count. 😵‍💫

🔍 What Was the Facebook Data Leak All About?

In simple terms:
🗂️ Your data was collected, shared, or misused — and you didn’t even know.

Things like:

  • Your profile details 👤
  • Friends’ lists 👥
  • Likes 👍
  • Political leanings 🗳️
  • Trip plans ✈️
  • What color you’d be in the next life according to a quiz 🤦

All handed over because you gave permission to an app you didn’t even remember installing.

😟 Should You Worry?

Here’s what most people thought at the time:

“I’m not that important. Who wants to steal my data?”
“I only post birthday wishes and trip photos.”
“What will anyone do with my dog’s pictures anyway?”

Fair point. 🐶
But it’s not always about what you post — it’s about how it builds a profile of you.

Think of your data as digital gold 🪙 — advertisers, political groups, scammers, and shady third parties want it. Badly.

🤷 So Should I Delete My Facebook Account?

Brian Acton, co-founder of WhatsApp (yes, that WhatsApp, which Facebook acquired), famously tweeted:

🐦 “It is time. #DeleteFacebook”

🔥 Bold move, considering he profited from Facebook’s purchase of WhatsApp.

But he had a point.

💡 But Here’s the Dilemma…

If we all leave Facebook:

  • Who’s going to Like our throwback vacation pics? 🏝️
  • Who’s going to remember our birthdays without reminders? 🎂
  • Where else can we low-key stalk our ex-colleagues? 👀
  • How will we know that “John is feeling blessed today”? 🙌

Let’s be honest — for many, Facebook = entertainment, connection, and digital validation.
It’s not just an app, it’s a lifestyle. 😅

🧑‍💻 Is Anywhere Truly Safe?

You think it’s just Facebook? Think again.
Twitter accounts of Presidents and Prime Ministers have been hacked.

  • Trump’s Twitter was deactivated for 11 minutes in 2017.
  • India’s PM had his handle hijacked by a teenager in 2016.

If world leaders can get digitally slapped — what chance do we stand?

🍏 What Did Tim Cook Say?

Apple CEO Tim Cook had a powerful response:

“We wouldn’t be in this situation if the value of your data wasn’t being monetized so heavily.”

Translation:
When the service is free, you are the product. 🧠

✅ So, What Can We Do?

Deleting Facebook might help — but it’s not the whole solution.
Here’s a practical checklist instead:

  • 🔒 Review your privacy settings (regularly!)
  • ❌ Revoke access from apps you don’t use
  • 🧠 Don’t take every quiz you see
  • 👁️‍🗨️ Be mindful of what you post — your data paints a picture
  • 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Move to platforms where your data rights are better respected

And if you do choose to #DeleteFacebook — congrats, you’re officially part of the resistance. 🫡
