Promoting Your Products

Free or paid? The right path depends on your product.

In today’s digital world, there are countless ways to promote your products—some free, some paid.

When we talk about paid promotions, most people instinctively try to avoid them at first. They lean toward free options, like:

  • Sharing on social media
  • Posting in group chats
  • Using professional networking platforms
  • Asking friends and family to spread the word

Sounds practical, right? But let’s pause and be honest:

Will that strategy even reach 0.1% of your potential market?

Unless your product is rock-solid, highly unique, and in massive demand, relying solely on free promotions might not be enough. Yes, you might ask your friends and relatives to share it—but do they really have the time or drive to promote your product with the same passion you do?

In most cases, the answer is “No.”

When Free Works—and When It Doesn’t

If your product is truly unique, has no strong competitors, or solves a real market pain point—you might succeed with just free promotions. But if your offering is similar to others, or your quality isn’t exceptional, then it’s worth investing in paid promotions.

Let’s take a few examples:

📱 Facebook

When Mark Zuckerberg launched Facebook, there were no paid ads. It grew organically, riding the wave of its unique value.
But fast-forward to today—Facebook thrives on paid promotions. Even with billions of users, businesses still pay to reach the right audience.

📱 Xiaomi (MI)

Another fascinating example—Xiaomi didn’t heavily rely on traditional advertising. Instead, they focused on delivering quality products at affordable prices. The customers became their marketers. Word-of-mouth and trust did the job.

So, Free or Paid—Which One Works Best?

It depends on your product.

If your product is:

  • Unique
  • High in quality
  • Fulfilling a strong market need

Then your best marketing may come “straight from the horse’s mouth”—happy customers spreading the word.

But if not, and you want to stand out in a crowded market, paid promotions might be the spark you need to build visibility, reach the right audience, and scale faster.

Final Thought

Marketing isn’t just about shouting the loudest. It’s about knowing your product, your audience, and choosing the right path—free or paid—based on what will help your product shine.

Your product deserves to be seen. Just make sure you’re choosing the right spotlight.
